Newly elected Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Hussein Mohammed has described his triumph as a win for Kenyan football.
Speaking a day after trouncing his opponents at the Kasarani Indoor Arena, Hussein pledged to spark a new beginning in the local game.
“Thank you to all the delegates who supported the fresh start team and voted for change. This is not just our victory; it is a victory for every player, fan, club and supporter who wishes for a brighter future for our sport,” he stated.
Hussein is deputised by former international — Uefa Champions League winner, McDonald Mariga.
“Throughout our campaigns, we made it very apparent that we wanted to start with governance to fix football. When dealing with the federation, the delegates and the branches, we must adhere to the principles of honesty, responsibility and openness,” he stated.
“The work of rebuilding Kenyan football begins now. Together, we will restore pride, develop talent, and reignite the passion that unites us all. Thank you for making this possible.”
“Infrastructure is one of Kenyan football’s biggest hurdles, but there’s a way forward. By fostering private-public partnerships and collaborating with governments, schools, and institutions, we can build world-class facilities from the grassroots to the national level,” he added.
He scolded his rivals for using dishonesty in an empty effort to block their path to victory. “They tried propaganda to convince the masses that the numbers were on their side — it didn’t work! They tried coercion, deceit, and threats — it didn’t work! Change is here,” Hussein said.
Hussein was elected FKF president in a close race, receiving 67 votes in the second round of voting against Barry Otieno’s 23.
The third candidate who qualified for the runoff, outgoing vice president Doris Petra, conceded defeat after the first round.
The first round saw Mohammed amass 42 of the 90 votes. Petra, who was partnering with outgoing president Nick Mwendwa, had 31 while former FKF CEO Otieno received 10 votes.
Cleophas Shimanyula was fourth with
four votes.
