The 2023 title-holders Vihiga Queens dropped to third position after falling to rivals Kenya Police Bullets 1-0 in the FKF Women’s Premier League clash in Kisumu yesterday.

The two teams, separated by just a point before the match, have seen a significant shift in standings. Police Bullets now sit second after the win with 18 points while Vihiga Queens slipped to third with 14 points.

Trinity Starlets are fourth also 14 points, tied with fifth-placed Zetech Sparks. Reflecting on the loss, Vihiga Queens coach Boniface Nyamunyamu admitted the match could have gone either way.

“The game has not been easy. At the end of the day, a winner had to be found in such a tight match. If you make one mistake, your opponent takes advantage. They got a corner and utilised it well,” Nyamunyamu said.

Despite the setback, he praised his team’s tactical execution and adaptability.

“Diana Cherono is our utility player and we prepared for her versatility in training. I want my players to focus and we hope to take maximum points in our next match against Trinity Starlets.”

Police Bullets head coach Beldine Odemba lauded her team’s effort, especially given recent challenges.

“I thank God and the team. The girls pushed themselves, but we haven’t been utilising our chances well. Moving second on the log is encouraging as we eye the league title,” she said.

Odemba also highlighted the return of Mercy Njeri from injury, adding, “She outdid herself in this match. We learn and fight another day.”

With no fixtures next weekend, the Police plan to use the break to regroup and return stronger. Vihiga Queens, now on their second loss of the season, have had a roller-coaster campaign.

Their victories include a 3–0 triumph over Mombasa Olympic, a narrow 1–0 win against Bungoma Queens and a 3–1 success over Kisumu All Starlets. However, they have struggled in stalemates, settling for goalless draws with Bunyore Starlets.

Kenya Police Bullets have also experienced fluctuating form— dropping from a commanding 6–0 win over Wadadia to a 3–4 loss against Zetech Sparks.

Their consistency remains a work in progress, though they held league leaders Kibera Soccer Women to a barren draw earlier this season. In Nairobi, Ulinzi Starlets beat Wadadia 5-0 at Ruaraka Grounds with Joy Kinglady bagging a brace.

Diana Shakava, Mercy Airo and Fasila Adhiambo added to the tally. New coach Olembe Tembe expressed his ambition, saying, “My goal is to elevate Ulinzi Starlets to greater heights while also growing as a coach.”

Elsewhere, Bunyore Starlets secured their first win of the season, defeating Mombasa Olympic 2–1 at Mumboha ground. Goals from Clarice Audi and Sharleen Onjote sealed the victory, with Grace Matsili scoring the consolation for Mombasa Olympic.
