KENYA Ports Authority (KPA) held off Kenya Forest Service (KFS) in a pulsating five-set showdown, winning 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-9) in the opening match during the fourth leg of the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) league.

KPA started strong, dictating the pace with solid defensive play and powerful spikes to take the first set 25-19.

However, KFS responded in the second set, capitalising on their quick attacks and swift serves to level the game after a 25-21 win.

Momentum swung back to KPA in the third set, but it was a tightly contested battle.

With both teams exchanging points at crucial moments, KPA edged out KFS 25-23 to reclaim the lead. Refusing to go down without a fight, KFS forced a deciding set after a hard-fought 25-22 win in the fourth, setting up a thrilling finish.

In the decider, KPA stepped up their game, showing superior teamwork and endurance to dominate 15-9, thus sealing the win. Despite the loss, KFS coach Wachira Gatwiria remained optimistic about his team’s performance.

“The team played well today and I’m happy we got a point. The opponents were strong, but our attack and service were lacking. I’ve talked to the players, and we will improve against Kenya Army in our next match,” he said.

“Our reception and backcourt were good, and we missed Enoch Kiptum (outside hitter) due to an arm injury, but he’ll be back soon. We’re confident about making the playoffs.”

KPA coach James Ontere admitted his side had challenges but was pleased with the win.

“Our game today was not that pleasing. The team struggled a bit, and the opponent fought hard to take us to five sets, where we got two points and they got one,” he said.

“Our middle blockers were not up to par and reception and service were also a challenge.”

KFS will take on Kenya Army on Friday before facing Kenya Prisons on Saturday and Administration Police Kenya on Sunday.
