Gor Mahia’s camp is buzzing with excitement after last season’s Kenyan Premier League top scorer, Benson Omalla, returned to the club earlier this week.

Omalla, a prodigal son returning to a familiar home turf, is expected to restore the missing edge to K’Ogalo’s striking force, which had become blunt after his departure.

His journey had taken him through the highs of a record-breaking season and the lows of a disappointing stint abroad.

“Now, I’m back, ready to rewrite his story,” Omalla said after joining the rest of the squad for a training session in Thika.

Despite admitting his unfamiliarity with the striker, Gor head coach Sinic Mihic acknowledged the potential Omalla holds. The Serbian gaffer believes the striker’s return presents a beacon of hope, a chance for Gor Mahia to reclaim their rightful place at the top of the league.

“The team, struggling for goals in Omalla’s absence, had been yearning for a player with his instinct and prowess. I’m ready to give the striker a chance to turn his life around,” he said.

Prior to looking for opportunities overseas at the end of the 2023–24 season, Omalla, who scooped the Golden Boot gong after blasting in 19 goals, was instrumental in Gor Mahia’s record-extending 21st league title.

However, his international adventure with Safa Sporting did not go as planned. The Lebanese top tier side reportedly ended Omalla’s contract because of a tense relationship over unpaid wages.

“Omalla’s story is a testament to the power of second chances. His journey, marked by both triumph and tribulation, resonates with the human spirit’s ability to rise from the ashes. It’s a narrative that transcends the boundaries of sport, reminding us that even when faced with adversity, there’s always an opportunity to reclaim our dreams,” Mihic said.

East or West, home is best. The Kenyan international has fi nally returned to the coveted and highly regarded K’Ogalo fold, where he is expected to contribute to the title defence charge.

Notwithstanding his lack of experience with Omalla, Mihic acknowledged that the striker’s comeback greatly strengthens the team’s offensive line, which has suffered recently.
