Next week's Sirikwa Classic cross-country meeting received a major boost of Sh2.6 million from Reckitt Kenya.

The race which is a Gold Tour event is slated for February 3 at the Lobo Village in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

This will be the third edition of the race that has so far attracted athletes from 13 foreign countries including Ethiopia, Eritrea, Uganda, Poland and Britain among others.

Speaking during the signing of the partnership deal at Golazo offices in Nairobi, Korir disclosed that apart from Reckitt’s donation of Sh2.6m in cash, they will also avail Dettol products for participants, especially in under-20 and kids races.

“We are humbled that Dettol has gone further to focus on the welfare of the contests in the Under-20 and kids races. This is a clear indication of their focus on developing talent," said Korir.

He said the entry of the new sponsors will ensure this year’s event is held in the backdrop of a clean environment.

Korir, who was also accompanied by Golazo Kenya managing director, Dorcas Kibet noted that despite the government being the main sponsor of Sirikwa, the doors are open for the corporates to support the initiative.

Mokoro, who spoke on behalf of Reckitt Kenya's country manager, Asif Hashimi, said their contribution will undoubtedly contribute to the success of the event.

“Sport not only plays a crucial role in generating employment opportunities but also provides a career path for ambitious individuals. Sports is now a multi-billion-dollar enterprise, and the opportunities are limitless, “said Mokoro.

He further noted that Sirikwa Classic is fast becoming a breeding place of talent and world beaters.

Double Olympic 1,500m champion Faith Kipyegon won last year’s edition, before her historic performance at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Faith won the women's race in 33:52 while Charles Lokir scooped the men’s title after clocking 30:20.

Mokoro also added that the Kenyan government has already demonstrated its dedication to identifying and nurturing talents across the country through initiatives such as Talanta Hela.

“This initiative seeks to identify and foster exceptional individuals while also providing opportunities for them to monetize their abilities,” noted Mokoro.
