The Kenyan Deaflympics team is hard at work ahead of next year's Deaflympics in Tokyo, Japan.

They will hope to improve if not match their performance at the 2022 edition in Brazil, where they won 25 medals.

About 67 (53 senior and 14 junior) athletes were selected during the national trials at Ulinzi Sports Complex earlier this month.

Former international Caroline Kola, who is now coaching athletes living with disabilities, emphasised the importance of early preparations.

"We are training and preparing for the games. Some athletes are here (at Nyayo Stadium) while others are training individually in their preferred bases," she said.

"They performed well at the national trials, where we got 53 qualifiers in the senior category and 14 in the junior categories."

They are also targeting the World Championships in Taipei, Taiwan, from July 14 to 16.

Only 66 athletes will be needed for the World Championships. Kola said the Taipei event will reveal their readiness for Tokyo.

"We will have a youth athletics championship for athletes aged 14 to 18," Kola added.

"We came back with 25 medals from Brazil. We have to work hard to maintain or exceed that. The benchmark will be Taiwan," Kola stated.
