Margaret Gati is ready to win a medal for the country despite being the sole walker at next week’s Africa Senior Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameroon.
Gati said while it is a challenge to operate as a lone ranger in a championship of such magnitude, she is prepared mentally to take on the rest of Africa.
“It’s a really good feeling that I will be flying the country’s flag in the 20km walk in Cameroon. However, this being my first time in the senior category, It will be a good challenge,” she noted.
Gati said she has been consulting the experienced Kenyan walkers including Emily Ngii and hopes to ride on their tips to win a medal for Kenya.
“It’s always good when you are more than two because you tend to encourage each other. In this case, I am alone but I hope for the best,” she said.
The three-time Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) champion is among the 59 athletes (26 female and 33 male) who were selected by Athletics Kenya to represent the country in the week-long event. The Doula event will run from June 21-26.
The Form Four student at the Cheptonon High School in Nandi County said her participation in the National Athletics Championships at Ulinzi Stadium has prepared her well for her debut in the senior continental Championships.
“I have featured in continental events as a junior and I can't wait for the Cameroon show,” she said.
