The 2022 New York City Marathon champion Sharon Lokedi has promised to repay the faith Kenyans have in her after cracking Team Kenya to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Lokedi was initially named as a reserve in a team of four, Olympic champion and world record holder Peres Jepchirchir, former record holder Brigid Kosgei and Boston Marathon champion Hellen Obiri.

However, Kosgei withdrew from the team citing injury concerns thus upgrading Lokedi to the travelling party.

Lokedi said she recently learnt how much Kenyans appreciate her and will seek to repay them by performing in Paris.

“I never knew Kenyans loved me this much. People I have never met. The online debate (about my inclusion in the team) was great and now that I have the chance, I will run my heart out for them, my country and my career,” said Lokedi.

The Boston Marathon runner-up added: “I respect my fans for having faith in me. Being in the final team is a dream come true.”

The National Olympics Committee of Kenya on July 10 announced Kosgei’s withdrawal and Lokedi’s elevation following Kosgei’s admission she is injured.

Upon a review by the medical team, led by the chief medical officer James Ondiege, a decision was made.

Lokedi said she is a fighter and is going to Paris to chase history as she competes in yet another top marathon race.

“I am very proud to be part of Team Kenya at the Olympics, to fly the Kenyan flag high. I know the competition will be tough, especially from fellow Kenyans,” she said.
