Chepngetich shatters Buenos Aires record as Kenyans dominate races

Chepngetich broke the previous record of 1:06:10, held by Ethiopia’s Ababel Yeshaneh, who claimed the title last year.

2019 World Marathon champion Ruth Chepngetich blazed through the Buenos Aires Half Marathon on Sunday, setting a new course record of 1:05:58.

Chepngetich broke the previous record of 1:06:10, held by Ethiopia’s Ababel Yeshaneh, who claimed the title last year.

Alemaddis Eyayu finished second with a time of 1:07:04 while Joyce Chepkemoi rounded out the podium clocking 1:07:35.

Veronica Loleo secured fourth in 1:08:09, with Dorcas Jepchirchir coming in seventh at 1:09:03 and Sandrafelis Chebet finishing 11th in 1:12:19.

Chepngetich improved on her previous appearance in the half marathon, where she placed third in 1:06:18, trailing Ethiopia’s Yashaneh (1:06:10) and Gutemi Shone (1:06:12).

In the men’s event, Ethiopia’s Gerba Dibaba outshined the Kenyan contingent, clinching the crown in 1:00:24.

Kenya's Cosmas Mwangi (1:00:25), Richard Yator (1:00:44), Bernard Biwott (1:00:53), Gideon Kiprotich (1:00:54) and Isaac Kipkemboi (1:01:06)followed in that order. 

Mwangi improved on his third-place finish from last year, where he clocked 59:29 behind Roncer Konga (59:08) and Felix Kipkoech (59:28).

In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw clinched the title in 1:05:31, outpacing Loice Chemnung (1:06:47) and Joyciline Jepkosgei (1:07:04).

In Mexico City, Seoul Marathon second runner-up Edwin Kiptoo led a Kenyan sweep in the men’s marathon, crossing the line in 2:10:36.

Leonard Langat followed in 2:11:30, with Francis Cheruiyot securing third in 2:11:35.

Patrick Kiprotich (2:11:58) took fourth, while James Ngandu (2:12:29), Christopher Kipyego (2:13:29) and Paul Koech (2:13:47) finished sixth, ninth, and 10th, respectively.

In the women’s event, 2019 Boston 10km road race champion Fancy Chemutai sealed the victory with a time of 2:29:19.

Shitaye Eshete (2:29:22) of Bahrain placed second with Janet Ruguru (2:30:58) finishing third. Lucy Cheruiyot (2:34:15) finished seventh while Pauline Esikon (2:35:29) placed ninth.

In Indonesia, Paul Tiongik led a Kenyan 1-7 finish at the Maybank Bali Marathon after clocking 2:18:25. John Langat (2:18:36) and Geoffrey Kiprotich (2:18:40) completed the podium.

Mathew Samperu (2:18:48), Edwin Koech (2:18:49), Alex Korio (2:18:50) and John Mwangangi (2:21:24) finished fourth through seven respectively.

In the women's race Aurelia Kiptui led a Kenyan podium sweep clocking 2:36:59 ahead of Sharon Cherop (2:37:16) and Risper Chebet (2:37:55).

Careen Cheptoek (2:40:53), Jane Jelagat (2:45:54), Jemimah Wayua (2:47:27) and Pauline Mutwa (2:58:10) sealed positions five through eight respectively.
