Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) women’s team leave on Monday for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania ahead of the FIBA Africa Zone Five Club Championships.

A total of eight teams will be involved in the week-long regional showcase event scheduled for November 18-24 at the Dar National Arena.

“Since the team was confirmed for the tournament, I called my girls together and we have had three training sessions,” said coach Anthony Ojukwu.

KPA, who lost to Ugandan side JKL Dolphins in the finals at the same venue in 2019, want to go one better this time round and qualify for the African Championships.

“It has been a crush programme for us but I believe in my girls and trust they will give a good account of themselves in Dar,” observed Ojukwu.

He said KPA, who are top in the Premier League with 35 points from 18 games, will use their current form to dominate the championship.

National women champions Equity Bank, who were placed fourth after losing to APR of Rwanda in the last show are also headed to the Tanzanian port city.

“We are in camp and preparing hard for the championships. We want to improve on our position from the previous event,” said coach Sylvia Kamau.

Other teams include Gladiator (Burundi), Wolkite (Ethiopia), REG (Rwanda), The Hoops (Rwanda), JKT (Tanzania), Don Bosco (Tanzania).

Meanwhile, in a Premier League match played in Mombasa, Benjamin Muga shot 13 points as Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) thumped Umoja 71-32. Matches played in Nairobi saw Kenyatta University Pirates bet University of Nairobi Terrorists 73-60 as Dolph Benedict sunk 23 points.

Zetech University Sparks kept Kisumu Lady Bucks scoreless in the opening quarter and humiliated them 97-16. behind 12 points each from Naomi Bosibori and Edish.

Eagle Wings were too strong for Storms, keeping them at bay with a 45-28 victory. Shilalei Shani managed 14 points.
