Kenya Morans and Nairobi City Thunder point guard Griffin Ligare reckons strategic investment in the national basketball team will guarantee their success on the continental and global stage.

Ligare’s comments come in the wake of South Sudan’s appearance at the Paris Olympics.

South Sudan, who were Africa’s sole male basketball representatives in Paris, finished third with four points in Group ‘C’ that comprised heavyweights USA, Serbia and Puerto Rico.

He pointed out that Kenya’s past victories over South Sudan demonstrate Morans' potential to compete with top teams. “We beat them in previous encounters and this shows we can stand toe-to-toe with the best in Africa and beyond,” he added.

The Morans showcased their strength in the last Afro-Basket pre-qualifier of the 2020 season, defeating South Sudan 74-68 at the Nyayo Stadium.

Ligare said South Sudan did a lot of work behind the scenes, re-strategising to come back stronger. “They were not comfortable with us winning so they did a lot of work behind the scenes in terms of investing in their national team and bringing in players that can uplift the team,” Ligare said.

“We only need investment and pooling of resources into our national team. Success doesn't happen overnight. There has to be a four-year plan starting with taking part at the Afro-Basket,” he added.

Morans are set to take part in the AfroBasket qualifiers set for on November 22, where they’ll face Tunisia, Angola and Guinea in Group ‘E’.

Ligare also congratulated South Sudan for their Olympic display.

“We supported South Sudan fully in Paris because they carried the African flag high as the only men’s team from the continent,” he stated.

Scouting upcoming talents in the KBF Premier League as well as fan support will be crucial for Morans' success.

“I encourage more fans to come out and watch more games. Not just in Nairobi but also in Kisumu, Eldoret, Mombasa and Eastern regions. We have a lot of talents it’s just that they have not been seen yet,” Ligare highlighted.

He also called for increased sponsorship to boost the team’s prospects. “I urge more sponsors and players to support our national team. We have the potential to compete at the highest level,” he concluded.
