The highly anticipated Sterling Super Cup Basketball Challenge 2024 Seniors is set to take place from October 11 to 13, 2024, at Nyayo Stadium Gymnasium, Nairobi.
The tournament is not just about competition; it represents a community-driven effort to raise awareness and support for cancer patients.
In honor of the late Job Waka, a visionary leader and passionate advocate for sports, the tournament seeks to unite players, fans, and stakeholders from across the region.
As the former CEO of Sterling Sports Inc and MichezoTV, Waka dedicated his life to promoting basketball in Kenya.
His multifaceted role as a player, coach, referee, and certified FIBA agent allowed him to transform the landscape of youth basketball, creating invaluable opportunities for aspiring athletes.
Waka's legacy is a testament to his unwavering commitment to uplifting the community through sport, even as he bravely battled colorectal cancer.
For two years, Waka fought valiantly against the disease, remaining passionately connected to basketball.
Just days before he passed away on September 3, 2024, at Nairobi Hospital, plans for the tournament were underway, highlighting his enduring love for the game.
“Job was instrumental in numerous initiatives, including cancer awareness programs tied to basketball,” a statement from Sterling Sports Inc said.
His contributions were recognised by fellow stakeholders, including Kenya Basketball Federation Vice President Hilmi Ali, who described him as a transformative figure who provided a platform for young players to shine.
The Super Cup Basketball Challenge 2024 Seniors will feature 16 teams, including eight men’s and eight women’s squads, uniting players and fans in a shared commitment to a worthy cause, raising awareness for cancer patients and advancing research.
“Waka believed in the power of basketball to change lives. This tournament is our way of honoring his memory and continuing his mission,” Chief Operations Officer at Sterling Sports Inc Brian Mboya said.
Last edition, Ulinzi Snipers beat UON Vikings to clinch the men's title, while Noga overcame Equity Hawks to grab the ladies' gong.
