Khayega and Khwisero sports grounds in Shinyalu and Khwisero in Kakamega county have been earmarked for an upgrade.
The two facilities, which were handed to contractors—Damfor Construction— yesterday, will be given a facelift under the county's Phase II upgrade.
Edward Odera, who led other officers from the department of sports to the two facilities, said the county is targeting to uplift various sports facilities in every sub-county to give youths a chance to nurture talent.
He directed the contractors to complete the projects in accordance with the Approved Bill of Quantities and the agreed timelines.
"At the end of this exercise, we want to see a standard football field that will be utilised by our youths in various disciplines," Odera explained.
He said officers from both the Departments of Sports and Public Works will closely supervise and monitor the works till completion.
He urged members of the public to give the contractors ample time to work on the grounds and complete the works within the agreed time frame. The projects are supposed to be completed within 16 weeks.
The scope of work will include— leveling the grounds, planting grass, fencing the fields, and erecting goalposts in conformity with the Fifa standards.
Phase One of the facilities saw the upgrade of Solyo and Mukumu grounds in Shinyalu, Bumwende, and Emanani in Mumias East and Matungu, as well as Matete in the Lugari sub-county.
Already some of the fields such as Matete are complete and are awaiting hand-over to the county by the respective contractors. Three facilities in Butere, Navakholo, and Lugari sub-counties will serve as mini stadia.
