New Zetech Sparks goalkeeper Monica Karambu has said the desire to seek a fresh challenge and write a new chapter in her football career informed her move.

Karambu,30, severed ties with Thika Queens after 11 years to join the Bernard Kitolo ambitious Sparks project.

The hawk-eyed shot-stopper won three Women's Premier League titles with Thika since joining the now Joseph Oyoo tutored side in 2011.

Despite her iconic status, Karambu feels she still has fire in the belly to perform at the top level and is relishing the healthy competition for a starting berth in Sparks' colours.

"Opting out of Thika after such a long period was not the easiest of decisions but I  believe the timing was perfect for both parties," Karambu hinted. Football is a learning process and I will continue adjusting to the demands of playing at the highest level."

"There are a lot of fond memories with my teammates and everyone associated with the club. I still have the passion and desire to perform at the highest level and I can't wait to get started."

Karambu won the 'Golden Glove Award in the 2020-2021 season, recording many clean sheets in Thika's unbeaten run to the title under coach  Benta Achieng. A disastrous title defence last season saw Thika finish fourth. Consequently, Achieng departed Thika a fortnight ago on mutual consent.

While she last played for the national women's team, Harambee Starlets in 2018 in the Cecafa competition held in Rwanda, Karambu says she's itching for a recall after being overlooked in the past assignments.

She earned her first Starlets cap in 2015 and a shoulder injury ruled Karambu out for a month last season.

"No player can say no to Starlets because the chance to don the national team colours is a one-off opportunity. I want to regain my position."

Karambu has also played as a striker on several occasions but guarding the post was her passion since her formative years. "I played four matches last season as a striker because the attack was depleted. I am good with the ball on my feet but am better off with my hands."

It remains to be seen whether Karambu can dislodge Stellah Ahono who has made the number one slot her own.
