Nyanza Secondary Schools Term Two games earlier scheduled to start on Wednesday will now kick off on Saturday due to uncertainty over planned three-day nationwide demonstrations.

However, the venues remain Maranda School, Nyamira Girls and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology where the games are expected to run until Tuesday.

Nyanza Region Secondary Schools Sports Association secretary Tom Odhiambo said: “It is now official that teams will travel on Saturday to Siaya and arrive by midday. The championship starts the same day at 1 pm and concludes on Tuesday.”

“Referees are to arrive by 9 am on Saturday for a coordination clinic at Maranda School,” Odhiambo added.

He asked teams that qualified for the regional showpiece to use the extra days to properly prepare for the four-day event.

At the same time, Kisumu County Secondary Schools Sports Association secretary George Osura has backed teams from the county to dominate the regional showpiece.

“We are going to Maranda for at least six trophies. We are sending netball, football, rugby and volleyball teams,” said a buoyant Osura.

Nyakach Girls will compete in football, netball, volleyball and 3x3 basketball while Kisumu Day will seek to defend their football title. Kisumu’s other representatives are Onjiko School, who will have teams in boys’ football, volleyball and 3x3 basketball... alongside Maseno School.

Maseno are out to reclaim their rugby 7’s title but they face stiff competition from champions St Mary’s School Yala, regional 15’s champions Kisii School, Agoro Sare, Homa Bay School and newbies Anjego Mixed.

Meanwhile, debutants Ndonyo Mixed from Kisii County are ready to brush shoulders with the big boys in football.

Coach Mark Odipo said: “I believe in my team. I’m expecting good results and I think the boys can make it to national championships on their debut. I’m not afraid of any team because we are worthy champions from Kisii.”

Ndonyo are in Pool ‘A’ alongside Siaya county champions Usenge, Matutu PAG from Nyamira and Kisumu’s Onjiko School.

Kisumu Day are favourites in Pool ‘B’ which also has St Mary’s Yala, Masara Secondary and Agoro Sare from Homa Bay County.
