Kiambu's Governor's Cup attracts over 700 teams

He said his administration has disbursed money and given a tender for Thika Stadium, which will have all the required facilities

The newly launched Kiambu County sports extravaganza scheduled to kick off on October 28, has attracted 710 teams from 60 wards. 

Football will be the tournament's flagship project and will run alongside other disciplines including basketball, netball, volleyball, and handball.

The objective of the tournament, dubbed 'Governor's Championship Cup' is to provide a platform to discover and nurture talent among young people. 

Governor Kimani Wamatangi, who launched the sporting activity at the county headquarters in Kiambu town on Tuesday, said his administration will ensure there are proper facilities and sports is taken seriously. 

"We will ensure there are facilities for all sports across the county," Wamatangi said.

He said his administration has disbursed money and given a tender for Thika Stadium, which will have all the required facilities including a track, basketball pitch, football pitch, and a gym.

The stadium wall will have 188 stalls that will be given to the youths to put up small businesses to empower themselves.

He revealed that Nyamathumbi Stadium in Gatundu is also going to be constructed and will have an astroturf track and other facilities.

In the Kiambaa sub-county, the county government will construct a stadium in the Cianda ward, according to Wamatangi while in the Kiambu sub-county, the county government will complete the stalled amphitheatre. 

Other facilities include Kanjeru Stadium in the Kabete sub-county which will cost Sh176 million, Githunguri Stadium, and Ruiru Stadium. The designs for the facilities have been done and approved. The governor also promised to pay referees throughout the tournament period

 Kiambu County executive committee member in charge of sports, Osman Korar confirmed that 710 teams have registered. "The Governor's Cup will run every weekend and will last three months," Korar said.

He said that they conducted rigorous training for 180 referees and equipped them with knowledge and necessary equipment to enable them to deliver on their mandate. 

"We are going to be using them in this tournament and they will be getting their income as a way of empowering them," he said.

He added that Kiambu County has produced a referee, who will represent the country in the Women's World Cup. He said that the winning teams will be given monetary prizes and football jerseys.
