A jubilant Mahmoud Trezeguet believes Egypt’s vast experience can power them to Cup of Nations glory after booking their last-16 spot on Monday.
The winger earned Man of the Match honours for a tireless display as Egypt dramatically drew 2-2 with Cape Verde to qualify from Group B.
Trezeguet, who grabbed Egypt’s second equaliser late on, remained bullish about their chances after reaching the knockouts.
“With 10 years in the national team for me, there is nothing above football,” declared Trezeguet post-match.
“If it pleases God, our generation will leave with the trophy because we want to make history.”
The player was keen to highlight Egypt’s fighting spirit and quality in the squad.
“We gave everything for this qualification with fantastic teammates. Now the real competition begins,” noted Trezeguet.
With Egypt frequent contenders, the winger feels past experience can be decisive.
“In the knockout matches, our experience will make the difference if God wills and we will go to the end,” he added Trezeguet.
After progressing as Group B runners-up behind Cape Verde, Egypt appear to have hit form at the right time.
With vast tournament know-how within the squad, Trezeguet believes the Pharaohs can conjure another famous triumph.
