Sunira leads Moi Girls in Uasin Gishu title defence this weekend

Junior Starlets player Sunira Were will be the key player to watch when Moi Girls’ Eldoret defend their Uasin Gishu County title at Hill School, Eldoret, this weekend.

Were, who was part of the Starlets team that qualified for the Fifa Under 17 World Cup, will hope to inspire her teammates as they seek the sole slot to the Rift Valley Championships in Bomet County later in the month.

Head coach Robert Simiyu said they have thoroughly prepared for the two championships with an eye on the national games.

“The team is in good shape after immense training — which included friendly matches,” said Simiyu, adding that the players voided half-term break to avoid breaking their rhythm.

The former Plateau Girls coach said: “Going home could have cost us but staying in school ensured we did not backtrack in our preparations. We are optimistic about our chances to defend the title.”

Moi Girls’ face Mwiruti and Boinet in Pool ‘C’. Pool ‘A’ has Racecourse, Kalyet and Kerotte while Ngeria, Kamagut and Drys’ are in Pool ‘B’.

Pool ‘D’ has Cheplaskei, Kapsiliot and Loreto Matunda.

Moi Girls’ begin their campaign against Boinet on Friday. The top two teams will advance to the quarterfinals.

Boys’ champions Mwiruti start their title defence against Racecourse and Natwana in Pool ‘B’.

Pool ‘A’ has Kapngetuny, Uasin Gishu and Chebisaas while Bindura, Kipsombe and Wareng are in Pool ‘C’. Pool ‘D’ has Arsens, Umoja and Moiben.
