Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Western Region rugby 7s competition will resume on Wednesday at St. Peter’s Mumias.

The Rugby 7s competition was postponed last week after referees boycotted due to what they termed as low pay. Other games including football, volleyball, netball and racquet games were, however,  completed.

The games will resume from the quarter-final stage with national champions Koyonzo High facing a tricky tie against Bungoma’s Kibabii Boys.

In other quarter-final games, Kimobo will battle Musingu High while Vihiga will face a herculean task against giants Kakamega High School. Hosts St Peter’s Mumias will battle it out against Chavakali.

On Tuesday, Koyonzo coach Eliud Okwemba said: “The competition has been tough from the county to the regional level. However, my target is to retain the regional title but we have a tough battle ahead of us.”

Okwemba added: “I don’t want to talk about the nationals. My focus at the moment is to qualify from the Western region and then plan for the nationals."

The winner between Koyonzo and Kibabii will face the winner between Kimobo and Musingu in the first semi-final while the winner between Vihiga and Kakamega will play the winner between St Peter’s Mumias and Chavakali.

Two teams will proceed to the national championship to be held in Kisumu from July 29 to August 6.

The two teams will join St Mary’s Yala, Friends School Ajengo, Kisii School and Otieno Oyoo from the Nyanza region and Bwake and Kabianga High from the Rift Valley region.

Other teams that have qualified are Alliance High, Mpesa Academy (Central Region), Upper Hill and Nairobi School (Nairobi).

In the girls’ Sevens, Bishop Sulumeti will be up against Moi Girls Kamusinga as Mbakalo and Eregi Girls face off. Madira Girls plays Mwira with Kimobo facing Kongit in the other quarter-final.

At the same time, the Northern Region Secondary Schools Term Two games will be held at Takaba in Mandera.

Northern Region Secondary Schools Sports Association secretary Bishar Bontore said the games will kick off on Thursday to Sunday.

He said after the championships, the teams will proceed to Kisumu for the nationals.
