All candidates who have been salivating for the FKF President’s seat can start their campaigns after FKF boss Nick Mwenda assured football stakeholders that the long-awaited elections will finally take place between October and November this year.
Speaking during the FKF Awards Gala last week, Mwenda revealed that court cases were thrown out and all is set for the FKF polls.
“If you want to continue with the good job done by the gentlemen at FKF, start preparing your papers and let us meet at the ballot in October or November. The court cases that barred the process are over,” said Mwendwa
The FKF AGM was halted through a court order from the Mombasa High Court on March 15, 2024, by coast region NEC member Gabriel Mghendi.
The order prompted sports journalist Milton Nyakundi to file a petition, arguing that the NEC could not convene an AGM until the ruling was done. However, the case held no water and was withdrawn two weeks ago.
Mwendwa said the Special General Meeting (SGM) will be held in August, to approve the electoral board and pave the way for the polls.
Mwendwa’s statement came shortly after sacked Sports CS Ababu Namwamba asked the federation to fast-track the election process.
The FKF boss also took pride in pushing and souring funds for the gala awards that returned after three years, and also ensuring the Emerging Starlets made history by becoming the first Kenyan football side to qualify for the World Cup.
“We gave all the KPL teams Sh10 million for the KBC and Azam TV rights but no one will talk about that. We will soon make sure all matches are live on television,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ababu, who was a guest at the gala, asked the federation to fast-track the elections process.
“My parting shot to the entire FKF fraternity is that you are sitting on a diamond mine. Make sure the little issue of elections is sorted. Make the environment clear and run the football well to make Kenyan football envied in this region,” said Ababu.
