The eagerly awaited Football Kenya Federation elections have been thrown in jeopardy, after the High Court served the federation with fresh orders, barring them from holding the AGM or overseeing elections pending the hearing of a case.
"In the interim, the respondents are hereby prohibited from calling any AGM of the federation or doing any act of the Federation as prayed for in the motion pending hearing of the application. These orders shall remain in force up to October 7, 2024, unless otherwise varied by court order," the court order read in part.
This comes barely a week after federation president Nick Mwendwa had given stakeholders the green light to the elections, during the FKF gala awards.
Nick, had scheduled the special AGM for September to approve the electoral board and pave the way for the polls in November/December, but the court order now leaves stakeholders at a crossroads.
The previous special AGM was halted through another court order from the Mombasa High Court on March 15, 2024, by coast region NEC member Gabriel Mghendi.
Sports journalist Milton Nyakundi also filed a petition, arguing that the NEC could not convene an AGM until the ruling was done. The case was later withdrawn.
“If you want to continue with the good job done by the gentlemen at FKF, prepare your papers and let us meet at the ballot in October or November. The court cases that barred the process are over,” assured a confident Mwendwa during the FKF Gala Awards last week.
Nyakundi went to court again and was granted orders barring the elections on Tuesday ( July 30, 2024).
Sacked former Sports CS Ababu Namwamba had advised the federation to fast-track the elections before Mwendwa assured him of the same.
While the circus continues at Kandanda House, Fifa and Kenyan neighbours Uganda and Tanzania will be watching keenly, as the clock ticks towards the 2025 CHAN and the 2027 African Cup of Nations.
Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda won the bid to jointly co-host the 36th edition of the Afcon competition under the Pamoja umbrella.
