Kenya Police FC punched above their weight to qualify for the Confederations cup second round, with a 1-0 win over hosts Ethiopia coffee in Addis Ababa yesterday.

The debutants in the tournament needed South Sudan international’s 28th-minute header to grab the ticket to the next stage, leaving the colorful Ethiopian fans with blue faces at the fully packed Abebe Bikila stadium.

The star-studded team had goalkeeper Patrick Matasi in goal shielded by  skippe Musa Mohammed alongside Rashid, Baraka Badi and Aboud Omar.

The experienced Francis Kahata and Jackson Macharia were brought in midfield to partner Marvin Nabwire as Charles Ouma and  Tyson Otieno were dropped from the first leg squad.

Alvin Mangeni started on the left wing replacing Eric Zakayo , while Jafari Owiti maintained his place on the right.  

Off-color Ugandan import Alfred Leku was dropped for Clinton Kinanga as head coach Antony “Modo” Kimani decided to go all attack.

Supported by a handful of Kenyan fans including Police Bullets contingent who are also on duty in the Cecafa Zonal Caf Women’s Champions League in Addis.

Police were fast off their blocks and took the game to their opponents showing their intentions from the word go, catching the Ethiopians off guard, who anticipated the cops sitting back and try playing counterattack.

 The club’s Executive Chairman, SAIG Nyale Munga, lauded the squad for the feat, adding that the team’s historic charge as they continue rubbing shouders with the giants of Africa.

" The squad is playing exemplary well, and all that remains is a key focus on our finishing; the African glory is within our reach,” Nyale said.

Head Coach Antony Kimani will be counting on his star-studded side, to go past Zamalek SC who are the defending champions in the next round next month.

"We will now strategize for the next game, we have and good squad that has what it takes to fight for major honours," Kimani said.

The team is expected in the country this evening, ahead of their KPL clash against Shaban next weekend.

Meanwhile, Police Bullets will face off with Tanzania's Simba Queens at 11 am this morning, in the semi-final clash of the CAF Women's League qualifiers.

The winner will battle either hosts CBE WFC or Kawempe Muslim who play each other in the second semis at 1 pm, in the finals set for August 29, 2024.
