Former Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Sam Nyamweya has called for a free and fair election process.

This is even as he prepares for another stab at leading the country's football management body.

Nyamweya stressed the need for the right leaders to take over the sport that is ranked among the most popular in the country.

The eagerly anticipated FKF polls are set to be held in December 2024.

Nyamweya alongside Extreme Sports Chief Executive Hussein Mohammed are considered front runners.

“As we await the roadmap and the election date, I call upon football enthusiasts and stakeholders to look forward to a refreshing journey together as we redeem and reclaim the lost glory of our football,” Nyamweya said.

“I call upon the Electoral Board to rise above partisanship and hold an all-inclusive election based on our laws.”

He has already announced his bid for the seat.

Besides Nyamweya and Mohammed Bandari FC vice-chairman Twaha Mbarak, ex-footballers Macdonald Mariga and Samuel Kempes Owino plus veteran administrator Nick Musonye are among those said to be nursing ambitions of succeeding Mwendwa.

A recent Special General Meeting (SGM) held in Nairobi, with at least 89 FKF delegates consisting representatives from Branches, FKF Premier League, National Super League, Women Premier League, Women National Super League and Division One League settled on the Electoral Board and Code that will be used during the elections.

The Board members are Hesbon Owilla, veteran journalist James Waindi, Alfred Ngang’a, former AFC Leopards chairman Dan Mule and Marceline Sande.

Farida Lucia Juma and Robert Asembo were co-opted as stand-by members of the Board, which is expected to vet and clear all aspirants and organise the elections.

The office wields extensive political power, following and an estimated Sh1.5 billion annual budget sourced from government support and grants from international bodies such as Fifa and the Confederation of African Football (Caf).

Outgoing FKF president Nick Mwendwa, who has been barred from seeking a third term by the Sports Registrar is yet to make his move.

Reports, however, say he is considering backing either FKF chief executive Barry Otieno, or long-time allies Robert Korir and Chris Amimo to succeed him.
