Riccardo Calafiori was released early from the Italian squad this week and returned to Arsenal in the hope he could play against Tottenham.

Calafiori was outstanding when Italy beat France. The Gunners play Atalanta in the Champions League midweek before facing champions Manchester City.

Mikel Arteta is already without midfield lynchpin Declan Rice following his sending-off last time out against Brighton and new £32million Mikel Merino is out with a fractured shoulder.

Jorghino has warmed the bench for Arsenal’s first three games this season but with Rice unavailable and Odegaard twisting an ankle in Norway’s international against Austria, he is in contention to play.

Arsenal were already worried about captain Martin Odegaard after he suffered a knock in the Brighton game.

However, he managed to play the full 90 minutes of Norway’s Nations League Cup match against Kazakhstan.

Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney are definitely out with hamstring problems and Jurrien Timber will be assessed on Saturday morning. He also received a knock against Brighton.

Havertz could drop back to replace Odegaard but Arteta is looking at either Trossard or Martinelli playing in behind Havertz with Gabriel Jesus’ groin injury recovery still work in progress but he could make the bench. New on-loan signing Raheem Sterling is also in contention on the left.

Galatasaray are interested in Jorghino after being rejected by Casimiro but his departure is unlikely. The Turkish transfer window is still open for clubs to do business.

Tottenham’s Ange Postecoglou says Dominik Solanke will be ready for Tottenham to face the Gunners and possibly defender Micky van de Ven.

Both Son Heung-Min and Yves Bissouma are in cracking form and pose a threat to Arsenal’s back line if Bissouma recovers from a knock picked up playing for Mali this week.

Both players scored this week for their countries. Watching Tottenham train this week, Timo Werner and James Maddison looked sharp.  However, Werner is more likely to start from the bench.

Postecoglou also has to decide who to start, Rodrigo Bentancur or Pape Sarr. Of course, there is always the option of picking either Lucas Bergvall or Archie Gray. The other question is, should the coach possibly play Dejan Kulusevski through the middle?

Southampton vs Manchester United

United coach Erik Ten Hag has spent the week working hard on his possible starting line-up for Sunday’s match at St Mary’s stadium.

Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw and Rasmus Hojlund could all be available.

Lindelof has not featured so far this season and in an ideal scenario would have been sold during the summer but he has suffered a painful toe injury in recent weeks. United have several options at centre-back meaning he might not even make the bench.

Luke Shaw returned from the Euros and was expected to be back in training at Carrington, fit and ready for the new campaign. He then suffered a calf injury but the medical team told us he could be available this weekend.

If he fails to recover in time then he will almost certainly be in the squad for the next game against Villa.

Rasmus Hojlund is in contention for a starting place after suffering a hamstring injury in the first pre-season game on tour in the United States.

United have scored only two goals in their first three games and need the striker fit and back in the team after scoring 16 times last season.

Southampton need to work on tactics to stay alive in this league but manager Russell Martin has little chance to change much now the transfer window is closed and Che Adams has gone to Torino in Italy.

Bournemouth Vs Chelsea

Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca might be able to pick his strongest team yet but Malo Gusto is still doubtful although he will be judged on Saturday morning and if fit will probably start from the bench.

Maresca will use Robert Sanchez in goal despite signing Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal. Reece James could return at the Vitality Stadium after suspension and injury but reports are suggesting he might still need a couple of weeks.

Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill are fast becoming favourites of the coach to start which could see Tosin Adarabioyo and Benoit Badiashile on the bench.

New signing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has impressed in training but is likely to be an impact sub. Carney Chukwuemeka and Cesare Casadei could also feature from the bench.

If Maresca goes for his 4-man attack Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto and Nicolas Jackson are likely to start but Maresca does have other options.

Writing this on Thursday I gather the likely team will be Sanchez, James (if fit), Fofana, Colwill, Cucurella, Caicedo, Fernandez, Madueke, Palmer, Neto and Jackson. Maresca does of course now have Joao Felix and Jadon Sancho to call on if needed.

Madueke impressed me playing for England on Tuesday against Finland and he will pose a serious threat to defenders Illia Zabarnyl and Marcos Senesi.

The Cherries have started their season reasonably well with a win over Everton and draws against Nottingham Forest and Newcastle. They have on loan Kepa Arrizabalaga but he is not eligible to play being a Chelsea employee so Neto will start in goal.

Bournemouth’s forwards are working well under Andoni Iraola’s system.

They sold their talisman striker Dominic Solanke to Tottenham but his replacement Antoine Semenyo has scored two goals and provided one assist.

He has taken 17 shots at goal so far this season which is more than any other player. This game finished 0-0 last season and Chelsea’s visit to the Vitality Stadium will be a challenge.
