Gor Mahia head coach Leonardo Neiva is not having sleepless nights ahead of their crunch Kenyan Premier League Mashemeji derby against AFC Leopards on November 24.
The champions have experienced mixed results in their last two matches to leave the Green Army frustrated.
A week ago, Neiva was whisked away to safety by law enforcement officers while skipper Philemon Otieno was forced to apologise to the irked fans after a 2-1 loss to City Stars at Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos.
On Saturday, fans stormed the pitch to vent their frustrations after a two-all draw against Murang’a Seal at the same venue.
In an interview on Sunday, Neiva said he is not quacking in his boots even as enraged fans continue to cast aspersions on the form of his charges.
The highly-anticipated fixture holds great significance for both clubs and their fans. Neiva is certain that his charges are equipped to handle the challenge.
“I do not have any restless nights before a game. I appreciate the significance of this match to our title aspirations and what it means to both sides. However, we are approaching it like any other fixture in the competition,” Neiva said.
“We know that AFC Leopards is a strong team but we have prepared well for this match. Our team is highly motivated and focused on achieving a positive result.”
Gor Mahia are eighth on the log with eight points from five matches while AFC Leopards are fourth with 11.
A win for Gor Mahia will confirm their bragging rights, while AFC Leopards will be aiming to upset the form book which has seen them suffer consecutive losses in the derby.
Neiva stressed the importance of maintaining composure and discipline on the pitch.
“It’s always important to keep a cool head during a match. We have to focus on our game plan and execute it perfectly. Passion and emotions can sometimes cloud your judgment, so we have to remain focused and professional,” he said.
“We are confident our players will deliver their best and give us the result we need.”
Neiva also expressed his gratitude for the support he receives from the Gor Mahia faithful, saying their presence creates an extra edge for the team.
“In a game such as this, the fans are extremely important. Their enthusiasm and support inspire the players to perform at their highest level. It is a blessing to have such passionate and dedicated supporters,” he said.
