Radio Africa eyes top prize as StanChart Road to Anfield returns

Radio Africa Group football team will battle old rivals Nation Media Group in the Standard Chattered Road to Anfield tournament set for Saturday, November 30 at St Mary’s school.

Radio Africa who played to a 1-1 draw against rivals NMG in the inter-media tournament on August 11 will be seeking to get a step better by clinching the title after finishing runners-up to Mapro FC in the tournament.

According to the five-aside draw conducted Friday at the Standard Chartered Bank headquarters Chiromo Lane, the media rivals will battle Kenya Airways B, Sifao Mobility B and Wananchi Group in Group H.

Meanwhile, Royal Media Services will face Jubilee Insurance, Wananchi Group B, Canon Insurance and Think Place in pool G.

MediaMax will battle Zamara, Batuk B, Kenya Airways A and Old Mutual in Group G, with two teams from each group qualifying  for the quarter finals.

Radio Africa's goalkeeper Eric Thuo says they will be challenging for the title, having fallen in the quarter finals during the 2019 edition.

“We have a relatively good team and we believe we will lift the trophy and head to Anfield. However, we expect tough opposition,” Thuo said.

Standard Media captain Eric Opong believes they also have the pedigree to clinch the title and head to the UK for the second time having won the 2016 title.

“We have trained well but our first target is getting out of the group stage, then aim for the title,” Opong said.

Standard Chartered Bank Kenya Associate Marketing principal in charge of sponsorship, David Lawrence, said they are happy to have returned with the tournament, having taken a break since 2020 following the Covid-19 Pandemic .

“As a bank we are proud to be sponsors of Liverpool and happy to bring the once-in-a-life-time trip to our clients in Asia, Africa and Europe,” Lawrence said.

Left Foot Sports director Aman Bhasin who will be in charge of competition said they expect a tough competition and wished all the teams well.

“Lets enjoy football and play a fair game and may the best team win.”
