Kiriago dominates KUSF Western show

Kiriago, a second-year student, won the 10000m and 3000m titles and finished second in the 5000m race.

Kisii University’s Isaiah Kiriago dominated the Kenya Universities Sports Federation Western Conference athletics championships.

Kiriago, a second-year student, won the 10000m and 3000m titles and finished second in the 5000m race during the two-day championships that concluded on Sunday at Kisii University.

In 10000m, Kiriago, who is coached by marathoner Saiti Salim emerged the winner after crossing the fi nishing line in 32:31.02, followed by Cornelius Kemboi of Kabianga — 32:40.00. Masinde Murilo’s Gideon Tonui was third in 34:55.00.

In the 5000m contest, Kiriago finished second to compatriot Eric Kipkirui in respective times of 15:25.12 and 15:50.23. Newton Kiprop, of Kabianga, was third in 16:19.40.

Kiriago reigned supreme in the 3000m after crossing the finishing line in 9:24.21, beating compatriot Clean Nyamware to second place in 9:30.25 while Kiprop was third in 9:45.00.

Kiriago was using the event as preparations for the National Cross Country Championships in Eldoret on Saturday.

“I am the reigning universities’ cross-country champion in the senior men’s 10km race.  is puts me under pressure to perform well in Eldoret,” said Kiriago.

Brevin Biwott of Masinde Murilo claimed the 1500m title in 4:30.42, beating Kiprop ( 4:32.08 ) and Elias Kiplagat ( 4:34.06 ).

Faith Jebet of Kisii clinched the women’s 10000m title in 42:15.23. She was trailed in second place by Daisy Cherono of Kabianga, who clocked 43:53.00, while Lucy Atieno of Masinde Murilo was third in 44:04.00.

Atieno redeemed herself by winning the 5000m title in 22:46.25, beating pre-race favourite Marriam Jepkorir ( 24:27.15).

Peninah Kimeli was third in 25:16.03. Kisii won the overall women’s title with 155 points followed by Kabianga ( 135 ) and Masinde Murilo ( 129 ).

Masinde Murilo topped the men’s division with 167 points, beating hosts Kisii to second ( 155 ) and Kabianga ( 55 ).

Masinde Murilo won the overall athletics title with 296 points ahead of Kisii ( 270 ) and Kabianga ( 195 ). Kisii University won the men’s and women’s basketball 3x3 titles.

In the men’s category, Kisii beat Masinde Murilo 19-9 while in the women’s category, Kisii overcame Masinde Murilo 22-2.

Masinde Murilo won the men’s darts title after garnering 42 points while Kisii reigned supreme in the women’s category with 33 points.

Masinde Murilo won the women’s tug of war title while Rongo won the men’s title.
