Kenya Police will carry a burden of expectations when they take on bottom-placed Bidco United, head coach Etienne Ndayiragije has said.

On Thursday, Etienne warned his top-of-the-table charges not to underestimate their opponents when the two sides meet at Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos, on Saturday.

He urged them to face the task at hand with dignity and resolve while reminding them of the unpredictable nature of football.

“The prospect of clinching the title brings a sense of urgency and pressure. However, we should remain calm and focused,” he said.

“The true strength of a team lies not only in their position on the table but also in their mindset and resolve. For us, the match against Bidco United is an opportunity to recognise the value of humility and to approach the game with the respect it deserves.”

Etienne has devised a strategy to exploit the opponent’s weaknesses while reinforcing his team’s strengths but warned that strategy alone cannot account for the unpredictability of a football match.

“The fluidity of the game means that plans can change instantly and adaptability becomes crucial. The ability to read the game, respond to shifting dynamics and maintain composure under pressure separates successful teams from those that falter,” he said.

The rivalry between Police and closest competitors, Tusker and Gor Mahia, adds another layer of complexity to the match. “Our objective is to solidify our lead and distance ourselves from our closest rivals, Tusker and Gor Mahia,” said Etienne.

“Victory could serve as a statement of intent, solidifying our position as title contenders. It will send a strong message to our rivals.”

In stark contrast, Bidco United are in a precarious position, struggling to find form.

While acknowledging their underdog status heading into the tie, head coach Anthony Akhulia said the notion that a team in a lower position can be easily dismissed is fraught with peril.

Despite their struggles, Akhulia reckons they still have the potential to rise to the occasion.

“There are numerous instances throughout the history of teams that have failed due to their arrogance. Innumerable upsets have occurred in the beautiful game, where underdogs have stepped up and defeated titans,” Akhulia stated.

Sofapaka host KCB in Machakos as Mara Sugar take on AFC Leopards in Awendo, Migori. On Sunday, Shabana host Mathare United at Gusii Stadium as Gor Mahia dare Tusker at Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos.
