KCB head coach Patrick Odhiambo has urged his side to sharpen their cutting edge in front of goal ahead of their Kenyan Premier League (KPL) showdown against Posta Rangers on Saturday at St. Sebastian Park.
The bankers were left frustrated in their midweek clash against Mathare United, where they were held to a 1-1 draw—a result that denied them the chance to climb to third in the table.
Patrick Otieno put KCB ahead in the 24th minute, a lead they carried into halftime.
However, Mathare refusing to roll over, struck late through Cetric Asengo to salvage a point. Odhiambo is adamant his team must be more clinical if they are to keep their title ambitions alive.
“We need to go back to the drawing board and focus on converting our chances. Dominating games means nothing if we don’t put teams to the sword,” he said.
Reflecting on the Mathare draw, Odhiambo admitted that his side squandered numerous opportunities to kill off the contest.
“We had several chances to wrap up the game in both halves, but our finishing let us down. In the end, our opponents capitalised and we dropped two crucial points despite controlling the match,” he lamented.
With a crucial clash against Posta Rangers looming, Odhiambo is fully aware of the challenge ahead.
“We have another tough test on Saturday. Posta are a tricky side and we must be at our best,” he noted.
KCB will, however, take confidence from their first-leg meeting, where they dismantled the Mailmen 3-0.
Francis Kahiro bagged a brace, with Stephen Etyang sealing the emphatic win. Posta head into the fixture battling relegation fears, sitting 16th with 22 points.
They were held to a 1-1 draw by league debutants Mara Sugar in their last outing and they’ll be desperate for a positive result to escape the relegation threat.
Despite their setback against Mathare, Odhiambo remains upbeat about KCB’s title chances.
“We are in the race and we are in a very good position. The technical bench and players are still confident about our charge for the title,” he highlighted.
KCB sit fourth on the log with 36 points from 22 games—level with defending champions Gor Mahia, who have a game in hand. League leaders Kenya Police (41 points) and second-placed Tusker (40 points) remain within touching distance.
