Makokha beats Lejirma to clinch Uhuru Shield title

Deaflympics bronze medallist Isaac Makokha beat former champion John Lejirma to clinch the Uhuru Shield title at the par 72 Royal Golf Club, Nairobi.

The Uhuru title is Makokha's maiden Kenya Amateur Golf Championships series triumph. He is 16th in the KAGC series.

Makokha, a former Kenya Amateur Matchplay champion, edged Lejirma in the 18th-hole play-off.

Makokha dropped a shot while Lejirma dropped two. They had tied at 218 in the regular 54-hole three-day tournament that teed off on Friday.

Makokha said: “I feel great and honoured to emerge the champion of this final event. We had very skilled top players competing for three days."

“It was a terrific fight with Lejirma and Balala, who are top players in the series. We wait for the new season next year,” he said.

In regular play, the duo played identical scores of two under par 70 in the opening round, followed by two over par 74 in the second round then completed the third and final round with another two over par 74 for a total of +2 218 to set a play-off decider.

In the final round on Sunday, Vet Lab’s Makokha had a poor start, compared to Lejirma's.

He recorded two bogeys in the 5th and 9th with all pars for two over par 38 in the first nine.

Lejirma sunk four birdies, three pars, two bogeys and a double bogey for one under par 35.

Battle for the title headed into the second nine where Lejirma relinquished his four-shot lead after four bogeys, four pars and a birdie with a total of three over par 39.

Here, Makokha hit two birdies, six pars and a bogey for a level par 36 to force the game into a play-off.
