Tennis Kenya will be seeking to host an ITF women's futures tournament next month
Speaking on the phone, Tennis Kenya secretary general Wanjiku Mbugua-Karani said the event will give home fans an opportunity to watch Wimbledon Junior doubles champion Angela Okutoyi play in a major tournament on home soil.
“We are working with a number of sponsors to have the event played on two weekends. We have seen Kenyan players play abroad and this tournament will offer them a chance to play at home,” added Karani.
"Okutoyi will play against her peers in the event which will bring players from several other countries. It will be a great tournament for not only Okutoyi but for the rest of our players; to play against some of the top players in the world."
Karani made the remarks after meeting the British High Commissioner to Kenya Jean Marriott and British Chamber of Commerce officials as they seek ways of improving Okutoyi's tennis options and opportunities in the United Kingdom.
"We had a fruitful meeting where we explored ways of getting opportunities for Okutoyi in the United Kingdom," said Karani.
In the meantime, the country's youngest Kenya Open champion will be playing at next week's women's Futures tournament in Monastir, Tunisia after playing at the US Junior Open last month.
Elsewhere, Karani is hopeful that they will have the Kenya Open tournament before the end of the year. The tournament was last played in 2018.
