Ofafa Jericho rugby coach James Kaili believes depth will be key for his charges during next week's national Term One ball games in Eldoret.

Speaking on Monday,  the tactician said the lessons learned from last year's Sevens championship in Nakuru will be vital for the week-long championship.

“Last year was our first time at the nationals. We picked up vital lessons from the event, especially on squad depth and tactical strategy and this being a 15's event,  we are well-focused and ready to do battle against the teams that have qualified,” said Kaili.

Jericho High School are in Pool 'A' and will be up against St. Patrick's Iten, Mangu, and All Saints from Eastern in the preliminaries. Kaili said they are doing a scouting report on all teams.

“It's a tricky pool. Mangu are a very experienced side while St Patrick's Iten are competitive. All Saints are an unknown quantity but the boys are up to the task and we are looking forward to it,” added Kaili.

Kaili said the success of the side has been down to having age-grade rugby in the school.

“In the last five years, we have put relevant structures in place hence the reason why we are posting better results. We have an Inter-house rugby competition right from Form 1-4 and our current players, who will be going to the nationals are mostly Form 3 students with a couple of Form 2s.  So come next year, we still expect to be competitive."

The coach said the success story at the school has seen the school churn out Kenya internationals like Peter Kaaria and Max Kangeri, who have donned the Kenya Simbas jersey in the last couple of years

During the Enterprise Cup final on Saturday,  another old boy Fidel Maina (KCB) started as a hooker and scored the team's second try in a 30 -27 loss to Kabras while another alumnus Brian Ratilla played a pivotal role at fullback as Quins upset KCB II 36-26 to win the Mwamba Cup.

Following  the national  championships,  Ofafa will next term aim to defend the St. Mary's BlackRock festival and  Prescott Cup
