Kenya Simbas assistant coach, Carlos Katywa has expressed his optimism for the future of Kenyan Rugby.

Speaking at the Mombasa Sports Club during the Driftwood Sevens, Katywa said, “There are several players who are displaying great promise and have the potential to play for the national teams.”

The coach had high praise for Chipu winger, Victor Mola who has been a key member of the Strathmore team so far this Sevens season.

“Victor is explosive, agile as well as very solid in defence and he shows a lot of self-belief in the way he plays. With enough time and attention, I am pretty sure he will further understand the game and master essential skills,” said the South African.

“Some of the players already in the national team setup like the Strathmore duo of George Ooro and Brunson Madigu as well as Edmund Anya from KCB have continued to prove their worth locally,” he added.

The recent performances of Kabras in the National Sevens Circuit have delighted the coach as they reached the finals in both the Dala 7s and Driftwood 7s, winning the latter 10-7 in a closely contested match against Menengai Oilers.

“I have always known that we are capable of winning more and the only thing that was lacking was the fundamentals,” he said.

“Skeptics always doubted our dominance in the shorter version of the game but we proved them wrong through meticulous planning and strategic execution,” he noted.

“This year marked the first time that Kabras had a dedicated pre-season for Sevens which significantly shifted the players’ mindset from 15's to the faster-paced format,” he added.
