Mwamba's Kevin Wambua has been appointed Kenya Sevens interim coach.

Wambua served as an assistant to the departing Damian McGrath. His first assignment will be the Africa Sevens-cum-Olympic qualifiers set for September in Harare, Zimbabwe.

He has signed a four-month contract to be reviewed on performance.

The  Kenya Rugby Union has also reconstituted the technical bench with Strathmore Leos coach Louis Kisia coming in as Wambua's assistant coach while former Kenya Sevens skipper Andrew Amonde takes charge of the strength and conditioning department.

Englishman Chris Brown, who had a stint with the Kenya Sevens between 2012-2013 under then-head coach Mike Friday, will be the strength and conditioning consultant as Steve Sewe returns as team manager, a job he left in 2016.

Lameck Bogonko will continue in his role as team physio while team manager Eric Ogweno moves to team liasion.

KRU chairman Alexander Mutai said Wambua will serve on an interim basis until the end of the Olympic qualifiers to ensure the team reaches the pinnacle of performance.

Wambua has been part of the set-up for a while. He is very experienced and I believe he can steer the team to the Paris Olympics next year,"  said Mutai.

Mutai added that the reconstituted bench will add value to the side as they look at gaining promotion back to the World Sevens Series for the 2024-2025 season.

"The collective expertise and dedication of this talented technical bench will undoubtedly be the driving force behind our team’s pursuit of Olympic qualification and success. Their commitment to fostering a culture of excellence aligns perfectly with the core values of the Kenya Rugby Union,” noted Mutai.

Sources familiar with going-ons at KRU said the board was against keeping McGrath after Shujaa's relegation from the World Sevens Series, especially in regard to his huge wages.

However, Mutai said that they have parted ways with McGrath amicably. "We had a  meeting with him (McGrath) on Tuesday and I explained to him the situation and he understood. He wished us well going forward and we as the union don't expect litigation," said Mutai.

One of  Wambua's first appointments will be to instal a new captain with Nelson Oyoo in Canada' pursuing other interests alongside Johnstone Olindi, Jeff Oluoch and Alvin Otieno.

The squad resumed training in June featuring 17 players.
