Kisii University, MMUST dominate KUSA Western Conference Championships

The action moves to Kibabii University in Bungoma on October 14 and 15, where the 10 universities will battle it out for titles in karate, taekwondo, table tennis, lawn tennis, and badminton.

•In rugby  Sevens, Kisii University narrowly beat hosts Maseno University 5-0 to retain their title. Kabianga High School alumni Dennish Omondi scored the unconverted try to give Kisii the deserved victory.

Kisii University and Masinde Murilo University of Science and Technology (MMUST) dominated the Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA) Western Conference games.

 Kisii bagged rugby 7’s, men’s scrabble, and men’s cross country while MMUST clinched ultimate Frisbee, mixed relay, and chess titles during the two-day championship held at Great Lakes University of Kenya (GLUK) and Maseno University.

In rugby  Sevens, Kisii University narrowly beat hosts Maseno University 5-0 to retain their title. Kabianga High School alumni Dennish Omondi scored the unconverted try to give Kisii the deserved victory.

In the semis, Kisii overcame Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) 17-7 while Maseno University overcame Tom Mboya 28-7. In the playoff, JOOUST beat Tom Mboya 17-0.

Masinde Murilo University of Science and Technology bagged the ultimate Frisbee title with 39 points and was followed by Kaimosi Friends University with 34 points. Maseno University finished third with 21 points.

MMUST also won the cross-country mixed relay gold followed by Kabianga University and Rongo University in third place.

Kibabi University dominated the women’s 10km race, bagging the title with 32 points while MMUST finished second with 35 points same as Kaimosi Friends University.

Kisii, captained by Kevin Kimutai, reigned supreme in the men’s 10km race, successfully defending their title. Kisii won the team title with 23 points beating MMUST to second place with 33 points and Kabianga to third with 57 points.

Kimutai clocked 31:45.07 and was trailed in second place by David Kiprono (32:32.13) of Kabianga. Cornelius Kemboi (33:10.96) came third.

The women’s chess title went to MMUST with 21 points, beating Maseno to second place with 18 points while Rongo came third with 13 points. MMUST edged Kisii to second place in the men’s category. MMUST garnered 27 points and Kisii 18 while JOOUST came third with 17 points.
