KCB will be bolstered by the return of Shujaa's Festus Shiasi and Kenya Under-20 player, Michael Wamalwa for the KRU Sevens slated for this weekend in Kakamega.
The bankers fell short in the opening Christie Sevens, losing to rivals Kabras 12-5 in the quarter-final with the sugar millers winning the tournament.
Shiasi did not play at the Paris Olympics and is expected to be fresh for the two-day tournament. Wamalwa was on mandatory rest after playing in the World Under 20 tournament in Scotland with the Kenya Under 20 squad early this month.
KCB Sevens' coach Dennis Mwanja said they are awaiting direction from the Kenya Rugby Union on when Vincent Onyala and Samuel Asati who both played for Shujaa in Paris can play for the team.
“I don't expect them to play this weekend but they could play in the final two legs of the series—Driftwood (Mombasa) and Prinsloo Sevens (Nakuru) at the end of the month.
Mwanja blamed a combination of factors for their subpar performance.
“The players we signed did not play and the players who played had not trained. We need to also polish up on some facets of play and I believe we will be better going forward," said Mwanja.
He, however, rued the schoolboy errors his side made, especially, in the quarterfinal loss to Kabras. “ The match against Kabras was winnable but we made several mistakes, which cost us in the game," noted Mwanja.
The tactician expects a competitive tournament with four or five teams in contention to win the overall prize.
“The circuit is long and there will be twists and turns. We are still in good shape to win but we will take one match at a time and see where we end up.”
The bankers finished fifth in the competition, bagging 13 points after beating the Menengai Oilers 29-12.
In the pool stages, Mwanja's charges had beaten Homeboyz 17-14 before dismissing Impala 47-0. They lost their final pool game to Nondies 17-14 to finish second.
Kabras lead the standings with 22 points followed by Harlequins on 19 points. Catholic Monks are third with 17 points while Strathmore close top four places with 15 points.
