Seven regions are expected to grace the Kenya Under-18 rugby trials at the RFUEA grounds on Sunday.

The one-day exercise will see a 60-man provisional squad selected from a group of 240.

The seven regions are Eastern, Rift Valley, Nyanza, Central, Western, Nairobi, Coast and Barbarians.

The Barbarians comprise players who missed the cut in their respective regions.

The regions have been grouped into two with Pool 'A' comprising Western, Eastern, Nairobi and Barbarians with the rest competing in Pool 'B'.

Kenya Under 18 coach Paul Odera termed the exercise an exciting chapter for school rugby.

"This is the start of creating Kenya’s Craven Week, where we will get the best talent at U18 across all regions in Kenya, play competitive matches and then choose a national team," said Odera.

"This is an exciting time for Kenya rugby as we look to secure the future of Chipu, Shujaa and the Kenya Simbas."

The exercise started with regional qualifiers in March with Odera wowed by the talent at this level.

"It's been an amazing exercise, going the length and breadth of the country and seeing how the game has grown in the last couple of years,” added Odera.

The exercise is vital for the future.

"These players will end up representing us in the years to come — either in Sevens or 15s. We must enlargen our scope and have rugby played at a young age, allowing the players to learn the basics early,” added Odera.

The Kenya Rugby Union chairman Alexander Mutai said there are plans to have the final team play Zimbabwe-select and Uganda in October or November.

Most of the players are expected to join the Kenya Under 20 team for the Barthes Cup in Zimbabwe next year.
