Fresh from winning bronze in the East Africa Zonal Championship in Burundi, the Kenya Under-14 are hoping for a repeat performance in next month's Africa Junior Championship in Togo.

Coach Rosemary Owino said they will focus on stamina in the next two months as they prepare to meet some of the top teams on the continent.

"One of our biggest challenges has been stamina, especially in the Under-14 category. It's something we are looking at. This is, especially key when it comes to rallies in matches where you need energy,” added Owino

Team Kenya will be up against the likes of Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and Nigeria among others.

Owino said the team of boys and girls are relishing the competition. "It will be a good test to see where we are when we meet some of the top sides,” noted Owino.

The former player said with hot conditions expected in Togo, the team will have to adapt.

“Burundi was equally hot and the current climatic conditions in Nairobi are equally hot. So it's going to be the same in Togo with a bit more humidity and we have to be prepared for it once we travel,” added Owino

The girls' Under-14 team finished third behind Burundi and Tanzania in the team event while in the individual categories, Bathsheba Ogamba, Nancy Kawira and Michelle Murage finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

The boys' team of Jeff Okuku, Ayaan Quadros and Aum Chandarana finished fourth sixth and 13 respectively. In doubles, Jeff and Ayaan won gold in the individual event.

In the Under-16 category, the boys won a silver in the team event while in the individual category, Baraka Ominde bagged gold. Ayush Bhandari was placed fifth with Brian Nyakundi seventh.

The girls' team won the overall team title while in the individual category, Stacy Yego bagged gold, Melissa Mwakha settled for silver and Hadassah Maine rounded off the podium positions.

The venue of the Africa Under 16 Championship has yet to be decided by the Confederation of Africa (CAT).
