Kenya Simbas are slated to play the South Africa Under-20 rugby team, Limpopo, and Boland Cavaliers as part of their build-up matches in readiness for the Rugby World Cup qualifiers in Uganda in July.
The Simbas, who arrived in Cape Town last week, have had a week to acclimatise and train in the mother city. Coach Jerome Paarwater said the team will be tested accordingly in the fixtures against the top South African teams.
“The boys have settled well and are relishing the battle. The next month will be vital for the team as we look at qualifying for the Rugby World Cup. Our facets of play will be challenged by the teams we are facing, and as the coach, I am looking at several aspects of improving our play,” added Paarwater.
Paarwater said he expects his side to improve on decision-making, defence alignment and the lineout.
“These areas will be key in the upcoming matches against quality opposition we are facing here in South Africa. By the time we go for the qualifiers in Uganda next month, I want us to be firing on all cylinders as we seek to qualify for the Rugby World Cup in 2027 in Australia,” said Paarwater.
The Simbas were due to play the South West District Eagles (SWD) last night in George, South Africa. The South African tactician said competition for places will be tough in the month-long tour of South Africa.
“The boys know what's at stake, so the players must be at their best not only in training but also in the build-up matches.
This South African leg will be split into two key phases. This phase runs up to June 22 and is in partnership with Western Province.
The second phase will see the team move to Nylstroom from June 22-27, where they will collaborate with the Blue Bulls.
This camp will include matches on Tuesday and Thursday against the Bulls’ Currie Cup squads.
The Simbas will return to Kenya on June 27 for a brief pre-departure camp scheduled for July 1-2 before travelling to Uganda on July 3 for the highly anticipated qualifiers.
