The Association of Insurance Brokers of Kenya (AIBK) has ushered in a new era of leadership, electing seasoned industry veteran John Kipkorir Lagat as its Chairman during the 59th Annual General Meeting held on March 28, 2025, at the Nairobi Serena Hotel.
Lagat's appointment comes at a crucial time for the Kenyan insurance sector, which is experiencing a notable rebound, as indicated by recent reports of increased sector profitability.
With over 25 years of experience, Lagat, Director and General Manager of Sapon Insurance Brokers, succeeds Anthony Mwangi, who served the Association since March 2021.
He brings a wealth of experience having previously served as AIBK's Deputy Chairman for four years, positioning him with a deep understanding of the Association's goals and challenges.
“A key focus for the new board will be addressing emerging risks, particularly in the digital insurance space, and innovating to meet evolving client needs,” said Lagat.
“We are committed to working with stakeholders to increase insurance penetration rates, which remain critically low in Kenya and across Africa. Additionally, we will work to ensure consumer rights are protected, by advocating for clear policy language and fair claims processes.”
He further stated, the new board will engage robustly with key stakeholders to ensure our interests are fairly represented, and that this industry, ripe for investment and growth, realises its full potential.
“We will specifically be monitoring and engaging with the legal and regulatory challenges that face insurance and insurance broking businesses in Kenya.”
Other members elected to the AIBK Board include, executive director Laser Insurance Brokers Ltd (Deputy Chairman) Jonathan Marucha, Maj Insurance Brokers CEO Joseph Otieno (Secretary), Pelican Insurance Brokers MD Cynthia Mungai (Treasurer).
Others are Soin Insurance Brokers CEO Pius Mutay, Complete Solutions Insurance brokers MD Bhawana Khanna, Canopy Insurance Brokers Finance Manager Caroline Mang’eli, Select & Protect Insurance Brokers CEO Ezekiel Angwenyi and Anthony Mwangi – ex-officio Board member, and CEO, Sunland Insurance Brokers.
