Some Mt Kenya leaders have urged President William Ruto to honour the promises he made during his campaign.
Former Kiambu governors Ferdinand Waititu and William Kabogo on Sunday claimed the region has been forgotten in terms of development.
Waititu said he is no longer affiliated with the UDA party and, alongside Kabogo, vowed to hold the government accountable and champion the interest of the people of Mt Kenya region.
"I lost my seat. From today, I won't keep quiet while our people are suffering," Waititu said.
Kabogo urged the government to prioritise development of the region.
“We can’t keep quiet when our people are suffering. We will talk and if they want to arrest me, I’m ready because people are tired,” he said.
They expressed their concerns during a thanksgiving ceremony of former Kiambu Woman Rep aspirant Mercy Nungari at Ruiru Stadium.
Public Service CS Moses Kuria, who was present, assured residents that the government is committed to working for all Kenyans.
He pledged to seek opportunities for the youth and asked for patience as the government addresses their needs.
“I know things are not okay but I want to assure you that I will always work for you. I’m responsible for employment and I will do what I can to ensure everything works. Please don’t send us home as I don’t want to lose my flag,” Kuria said.
Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga had earlier raised concerns about certain individuals attempting to sideline the Mt Kenya region.
“We agreed that we would walk together on this journey, but some people are trying to play dirty games. The marriage is still fresh and if we are not needed, we can walk out," he said.
Political analyst Albert Kasembeli warned that Ruto risks losing support from the Mt Kenya region if he doesn't address their concerns.
He suggested that Ruto should consolidate support and listen to the region's views ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kasembeli said the people of Mt Kenya region had expected a 50/50 share of the Kenya Kwanza administration, a similar move to that of the UhuRuto administration.
“Ruto is walking on a delicate path which isn’t very suitable ahead of 2027 general elections. That noise from Mt Kenya region shouldn’t be taken lightly. He should consolidate them and listen to their views,” he said.
Ruto had earlier denied neglecting the region, saying he will work and implement any development projects.
The President assured Kenyans that he would fulfil his obligations to all Kenyans, just as he had promised to do for the residents of Mt Kenya.
