Residents of Athi River in Machakos county have been advised to enjoy their Christmas responsibly bearing in mind that schools will reopen in January.
Athi River deputy county commissioner Patrick Mwangi told parents to be cautious about their expenditure during this festive season and spare school fees for their children's education.
He said the government was committed to 100 per cent primary to secondary education transition policy, hence the need for all parents, guardians and stakeholders to ensure that no child remains at home once schools reopen for the 2024 academic year.
"Even if you are going to enjoy yourselves and have fun, you have done good job the whole year, don't forget that January school fees is waiting for you," Mwangi said.
Mwangi spoke during the 60th Jamhuri Day celebrations at Mlolongo Primary School in Athi River on Tuesday.
"You are supposed to pay school fees in around two weeks time. Don't see January as being far, like another coming year. Go have fun, but know that your children won't get to school without fees," Mwangi said.
He said Kenyans must abide by the government's directive that all children go to school.
The administrator who read President William Ruto's speech presided over the celebrations at the subcounty.
The Athi River subcounty security committee assured residents of their safety during the festive season.
Mwangi said that the area subcounty security committee among other operatives, had already laid strategies including the way patrols would be conducted.
"But we aren't guaranteeing you that police officers will be deployed to your doorstep, it isn't possible. Reenforce your doors and gates by using strong padlocks," Mwangi said.
Mwangi told the residents to make good use of police hotlines to alert security agencies of any possible threats or incidents.
