Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua has hinted at re-branding the opposition outfit in three months.
Speaking in Wajir town during a party branch outreach programme, Karua said Narc Kenya will change its name.
The party was formed after the defeat of the government-sponsored draft constitution in 2005 and Karua has remained its leader since then.
“In two to three months we should be re-branding. A party is formed to look for political power. No party is formed to go and look for another party. Coalitions only come during elections when a party is looking to increase its chances of winning,” she said.
Karua whose party entered into a coalition with other parties that formed the Azimio One Kenya Alliance said they would start early preparation for the 2027 general elections.
“I want to appeal to our members to embark on a rigorous recruitment exercise, get new members from across the county to boost our numbers with eyes on 2027. We pray that God guides us so that we take over power,” she said.
“Narc Kenya is a party that advocates for civil liberties for all citizens. But more emphasis is given to the weak and downtrodden,” she said.
She said the Kenya Kwanza government lacks the transparency and accountability stipulated in the Constitution, adding that public servants use public resources to enrich themselves instead of the general public.
Karua said poor leadership was not only evident in the national government but also the counties.
She criticised governors for marginalising people who are not from their clans.
a fierce critic of the Kenya Kwanza regime, Karua hit out at President Ruto, accusing him of lying to Kenyans on many things.
“Dr Ruto told us that the fuel price would be reduced instead it has gone up by sh 7, he also lied to us that his administration has eliminated budgets of the offices of the first lady and DP’s spouse and Cabinet Secretary spouse when in the real sense the budgets have been secretary taken back,” she said.
“We have no problem with their spouses having offices. The only issue we have is using public money to fund their offices. Even former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s spouse funded her Linda Mama programme by her means,” she said.
Karua whose party did not win a single elective was Raila Odinga’s running mate in the last election. Two weeks ago, the party issued a notice to exit the Azimio coalition.
The decision was communicated in a letter addressed to the coalition secretary-general Junet Mohammed by Narc Kenya's acting secretary general Asha Bashir.
Karua in a tweet on X said “Our stay in Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance is no longer tenable”.
Her visit to Wajir comes barely 5 months after the ODM party leader visited Wajir to launch the recruitment drive. Karua who was accompanied by party officials met with Wajir governor Ahmed Abdullahi.
