The state is keen on ensuring full implementation of the CBC through provision of the necessary learning materials.
Education CS Julius Migos said his ministry is nearly completing construction of classrooms for learners in Junior Secondary Schools.
JSS consists of students in Grade 7, 8 and 9.
A majority of Kenyans, through a public participation report by the Presidential Working Party, stated that JSS be domiciled in primary schools.
Migos said their assessment revealed they needed at least 16,000 new classrooms across the country to support the transition from grade 8-9 and as a way of implementing the CBC.
“The government devolved the funds for faster construction of the classrooms in primary schools with JSS students. I assure Kenyans that the government is on the right track to ensure full implementation of CBC,” Migos said.
Speaking when they opened four JSS classrooms at Ober Boy’s Boarding Primary School in Rachuonyo East on Monday, the CS said his ministry has also prepared and distributed textbooks for learners to most schools in the country.
According to the CS, all schools will receive the books by December 15, 2024.
Headteachers have been advised to keep the books until all the consignments are dispatched and have reached them.
The CS was accompanied by Nyanza regional director of education Nelson Sifuna, his Homa Bay counterpart Eunice Khaemba and Homa Bay commissioner Moses Lilan.
The school head teacher Bernard Juma was also present.
“All schools will get the books by December 15. If your school hasn’t received them they should know that books are on the way,” he added.
The government is in the process of recruiting an additional 20,000 teachers, after hiring 46,000 others on permanent and pensionable terms.
“We want enough teachers in junior schools to enable students to get the best education possible.”
Juma said the school spent Sh4 million in constructing the four classrooms.
“The school has written a proposal
requesting the Ministry of Education
to build them a science laboratory.
We’re appealing to the government
to fast-track it to enable students to
undertake their practical studies,”
Juma said.
