A middle-aged man was on Tuesday sentenced to serve three years in jail by a Kenol Court for trafficking bhang.
Simon Ndegwa, who appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Sheila Nyaga, was described as a repeat offender
He had previously been convicted for a similar offence in the same court and had served a one-year jail term in 2023.
According to the prosecution, on October 24 at Igikiro trading centre in Murang’a, police offices from Sabasaba police station while on routine patrol stumbled upon the accused person holding a purple bag.
“On seeing Inspector Agnes, PC Octavia, PC Baraza and PC Mwangi, the accused panicked and fled prompting the officers to pursue him,” the prosecutor said.
They apprehended him and after conducting a search on him, they found 60 sachets of bhang in the purple bag and an additional 8 rolls wrapped in a black polythene.
The accused was arrested and taken to Sabasaba police station and thereafter was arraigned in the Kenol law courts.
He pleaded guilty and in mitigation, prayed the court for leniency, saying there are people who depend on him as the sole provider of his family.
The accused was convicted on his own plea of guilty and sentenced to three years in prison.
