A 45-year-old man was on Monday handed a three-year jail term by a Murang’a court after he admitted charges of assaulting and inflicting injuries to his wife using a machete.
Francis Mwaniki was accused of assaulting and severely injuring his wife Rachael Wambui on October 5 at Gitiri village in Kahuro Sub County, Murang’a.
According to the prosecution before Resident Magistrate Dorence Soy, the accused is said to have committed the offence while under the influence of alcohol and bhang.
The court heard that Mwaniki arrived at his home in the evening hours and caused commotion at home where he took a machete and expurgated his wife on her cheek and right hand.
The complainant was rescued by neighbours after she raised an alarm calling for help, prompting his arrest by police officers from a nearby police post.
The Prosecution’s report also indicated the accused threatened to harm the police officers during the time of arrest.
According to the P3 report presented in the court, Wambui lost two of her right-hand fingers, and sustained cuts on her cheek and neck.
In his mitigation, Mwaniki pleaded for leniency, promising to stop abusing alcohol and bhang.
The magistrate said the accused was a threat not only to his family but also members of the community.
He ordered Mwaniki to be committed to a guidance and counselling session during his jail term to help him manage drug and substance use and anger management.
“While serving the three-year jail term, you are ordered to attend guidance and counselling sessions to help manage drug and substance use and anger,” added the Magistrate.
