A 50-year-old man has been sentenced to one year in prison by a Murang’a court after he pleaded guilty to stealing his father’s chicken worth Sh8,400.
Stephen Chege was charged with stealing seven chicken belonging to his father Ngomano Gichuhi on October 7, at Kambirwa Location in Murang’a East Subcounty.
According to the prosecution’s facts presented before Senior Resident Magistrate Eric Musambai, the accused was apprehended as he was trying to sell the chicken at Mukuyu market within Murang’a town a day after the theft incident.
His father told the court his son has been a nuisance as he has stolen many household goods with the aim of getting cash to buy alcohol.
The complainant asked the court to consider handing Chege a custodial sentence so as to help him reform from stealing habits.
In his mitigation, Chege pleaded for leniency promising to change and abandon the habit of stealing.
The prosecution objected to his plea on the grounds that he was a repeat offender with the magistrate stating the one-year jail term will serve as a deterrent and help Chege to reform.
