The government has embarked on the construction of a Sh50 million Gatuanyaga Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) market in Thika East Sub County in efforts to boost trade in the area.

The project set to improve livelihoods in one of the dry regions of Thika is expected to be completed in eight months’ time.

Thika Town MP Alice Nganga said the market is expected to hold more than 100 traders and will have several amenities, among them a dedicated ICT hub aimed at providing opportunities for local youth to venture into digital jobs

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony today, the MP said the market will provide traders with a better business environment to work, away from the scorching sun as well as during the rainy seasons.

She said the market will be a game changer, especially with the completion of the Muguga-Munyu-Komo road, which is expected to open up the region to trade, boosting development.

"The commitment is to have the tarmacking of the road and construction of this ESP market completed on time. This will accelerate the development of this part of the subcounty by boosting trade. We also expect the contractor to give manual jobs to the residents,” said MP Ng’ang’a.

Traders who operate in an open area section in the area welcomed the construction of the market, saying it will not only improve their working conditions but also significantly boost their businesses and provide a better environment for trade.

Led by Joyce Wairimu, the traders called on the authority to ensure spaces for trading will be given to the local traders.

"This market will provide us with a better environment to operate in. It has been a challenge trading in the scorching sun as well as during the rainy seasons. We hope the current traders will get priority during the allocation of spaces," said Wairimu.
