Police in Kwale have launched a manhunt for an unknown criminal gang terrorising residents and breaking into their homes.

The gang, which is believed to be using a Probox car in conducting their mischief, mostly attacks late at night and sometimes in broad daylight.

Matuga subcounty is the most affected with cases of burglary reported in Tsimba Golini, Kwale town, Kinarini, Jeza, Wayani, Godoni among others.

County commissioner Gideon Oyagi said the security agencies are aware  and have launched operations to flush out the criminals.

"The search is ongoing, soon they will be brought to book," he said in an interview in his office at Kwale headquarters.

Oyagi, however, referred to the gang as petty thieves saying there is no cause for alarm because his team is pursuing them.

In recent weeks, there has been a public outcry following increased cases of burglary.

Last Friday, Matuga police arrested a suspect and recovered electronic gadgets, many of which were laptops, Tv sets, phones, DVD players, sound systems among other properties.

Oyagi said security has been beefed and police are working around the clock to subdue the criminal gang.

"I can assure their days are numbered, they should either quit or face the wrath of the law because our officers are alert," he said.

On Saturday, various security agencies and stakeholders held a meeting at Kwale Cultural Centre in Matuga to discuss the status of the county security ahead of the August polls.

In a separate event, Kinango assistant county commissioner Charles Wanyonyi Wesamba also appealed to the public to share information on the whereabouts of suspicious individuals.

He said it would be good for locals to embrace community policing and help security officers keep the county safe.

"Everyone should be a Nyumba kumi elder, be alert and know your new neighbour and what they are doing," he said.

Wesamba said some politicians might hide goons in villages to disrupt campaigns hence the need for increase vigilance.

He cautioned the locals against sheltering criminals in their homes warning of stern actions to whoever will be found.
