National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has lashed out at President Uhuru Kenyatta, saying he lied about the real intention of the handshake between him and Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga.
Speaking during a campaign rally in Lamu on Sunday, Muturi said the handshake was initially meant to promote peace.
He was in the company of UDA running mate candidate Rigathi Gachagua and Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen.
He said at no time was there a discussion to have the handshake turned into a political alliance.
Muturi said it was disappointing that the president ended up endorsing Raila for the presidency.
“He said they had a cup of tea with Raila to discuss peace but later came asking us to vote for Raila just because he had endorsed him. I told him that won’t happen,” Muturi said.
Muturi urged Lamu voters to vote overwhelmingly for Kenya Kwanza to teach the President a lesson.
“Do not be lied to like we were. Only a Ruto presidency will save this country. I am asking you to come out in large numbers and vote in William Ruto as the fifth president,” he said.
Gachagua said Kenya Kwanza will not encourage a similar handshake agreement because they are confident that Ruto will win the elections in the first round.
He chided Raila to be ready to accept defeat should he lose.
Gachagua urged residents to vote in the six-piece pattern for Kenya Kwanza-affiliated candidates to enable Ruto to form a strong government.
